White & Associates Searches: Retained & Contingency Searches
In the recruiting industry, searches are typically conducted using retained or contingency search methods. Understanding the differences between these methods is critical in determining which level of service is needed for a particular search. White & Associates engages in both retained and contingency searches for both professional and executive level search assignments.
Retained Search
A Retained Search is preferable in cases where a company has a pressing executive level need that requires a candidate who will hold a key leadership role and whose service is key to the overall organizational success. Given the level of importance of these positions, there is often a degree of urgency and/or confidentiality that accompanies this type of retained search.
Contingency Search
A Contingency Search by definition means that the search firm will only collect a fee if they find and place a suitable candidate for the position in question. This type of search, regardless of the number of qualified candidates presented, if none are ultimately hired, the search firm earns nothing. A contingency search means that a client company is free to use other search firms or source other candidates on their own. The vast majority of searches today are contingency searches.
Contract Search
The Contract Search by definition means that a candidate works for a company without being a full time employee. This means the company is not required to offer benefits. The pay is usually higher. The company can terminate the contract usually on a short term base. This affords the company the opportunity to examine the candidate on a trial base and if so desired offer permanent employment later.
